PRIVATE
STUDIO VISIT WITH VIVIEN KOHLER
SUNDAY, 26 MAY 2024 (11:00-12:30)
Location: August House, Johannesburg
Experimental mixed media painter Vivieni Kohler will provide a closed door studio tour, inviting guests to share a drink with him and enjoy his works.
Vivien Kohler was born 1976 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The
concept of liminality; the liminal city and its people, lies
at the core of Kohler's work, which explores migration,
marginalisation and displacement in the urban landscape of
post-Apartheid South Africa.
Kohler constructs two and three-dimensional assemblage
pieces; appropriating discarded material, painting
naturalistic figures and detailed replications of packaging
material (a layered visual metaphor signifying transience,
migration, displacement), to articulate challenging social
and economic circumstances that affect those on the
periphery. "My works do not hide the realities of unfair
perception, but symbolically display it in relation to the
liberating verdict of the human spirit". Fascinated by man's
ability to transcend 'the conceptual decay', he captures
with gentle rawness the complexity of the human disposition.
His work seeks to illuminate the duality of lived
experiences by depicting, with an air of surrealist and
meditative moments of the individual, mentally cocooned
from, yet physically enveloped by life's detritus.
Kohler has produced ten solo shows to date shown both
locally and internationally including Given to Fly (AVA,
CT,2012), De(re)tritus (Lovell Gallery, CT, 2014) and This
too shall come to pass (Gallery MOMO, Johannesburg, 2022).
Kohler has also exhibited two solo exhibitions at
Sulger-Buel Lovell namely Clay Opera (2017) and At the Still
Point of the Turning World (2018) curated by Andrew
Lamprecht, and has exhibited at the African American Museum,
Dallas, USA (2023) “If you look hard enough, you can see our
future” a group exhibition. He is represented by Gallery
MOMO.

KNOWLEDGE
MAKING THROUGH ART
SUNDAY, 26 MAY 2024 (11:00-11:45)
Location: Mezzanine Talks Area at RMB Latitudes
This conversation thinks of art as a social science, noting its power, resonance and capacity for society-making. Prompting thoughts about the ways in which art is cultivated and consumed.
Kekana believes art is a powerful social science, shaping
society and sparking important conversations. In this panel
discussion moderated by Kekana, a range of experts will
delve into the ways art is created and experienced.
This extends to identifying other living models often
established as alternatives, how they contribute to the
dissemination of artistic expression into the broader public
space, as well as how they illustrate a capacity to draw
from the ways in which everyday people already engage in
artistic practice. Recognising the capacity for art to
cultivate, record and share knowledge, we are prompted to
think also about the extent to which curriculum is informed
by African Art, its history, and traditional practices tied
to indigenous knowledge systems — in relation to what is
inherited from elsewhere, and how this ultimately affects
the canon from which art is perceived and judged.
Speakers:
Lebo Kekana, Latitudes Live Curator, Visual Artist and
Founding Director of FEDE Arthouse
Lawrence Lemoena, Visual Artist and Lecturer at UNISA,
Department of Art and Music
Anelisa Mangcu, Curator and Founding Director at Under the
Aegis
Marc Edwards, Senior Lecturer (ret.) Research Associate:
